Today’s unit game will use STAC hands but it will not be a STAC game since the game announcement did not include notice of an additional STAC fee.

Dan Kroll is doing partnerships for the unit games on a trial basis.

The Unit board will meet again before the game in July.

  1. New business

Unit games:

Buying entries:  In order to shorten the wait times to buy entries, we will have a separate line for the limited games (99ers and 499ers) in addition to the line for the open game.  A Board member will assist Edmund in the main line.

Food at unit games:

-The Board decided not to buy extra (storable) food in case we run out.

-The Board will not provide sodas.

-The person in charge of food will provide milk for coffee and water.

Lessons:  Joanne has agreed to take on the role of lesson scheduler.

New boards and cards: Edmund is authorized to purchase as needed.

Table fees: Any change is deferred until the board can get more data on income from games this year from the Unit treasurer.   In the event of an increase, the board will explain the reason and give advance notice to players.

  1. June Sectional

Richard and Steve will be in charge.  Libby, Joanne, and Dean will be away.

Libby will transport paper and supplies to Gail before May 23.  Gail will deliver supplies to the Pomeroy Center by 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.

Libby will send Richard the inventory of supplies taken after the January Sectional.

ACBL Unit 506 Meeting Minutes

March 26, 2017

  1. Call to order

Libby Noronha called to order a special meeting of the Unit 506 Board at 4:00p.m. on March 26, 2017 at her house in San Francisco, CA.

The following persons were present: Joanne Allen, Richard Bellerose, Gail Gabiati, Martin Kaye, Dean Wangsvick, Kris Wong, and Edmund Wu. Marion Robertson attended the meeting to present her ideas for a 99’er section at upcoming Unit Games.

II. Discussion

1) Marion Robertson presented her ideas about adding a 99’er section to our regular Unit Games. Marion noted that there are many, many new players at the Metropolitan/Sutter Street Club and at Quicktricks who would like to play duplicate but are intimidated by higher level players. Marion promised to promote the game at the Metropolitan/Sutter Club. Board members promised to promote the game at Quicktricks. The Board adopted Marion’s suggestion andwill begin to hold 99’er sections at Unit Games. Joanne Allen will develop a flyer to be distributed especially to newer players.

2) The Board agreed to the following guidelines regarding the use of email “blasts” to Unit members: a) We will send out one email only for each Unit Game and each Sectional approximately 10 days in advance of the event; b) We will send out additional emails only for items of high importance, e.g., cancellation of an event. Joanne Allen and Edmund Wu are authorized to send out emails using Marketing Solutions/Pianola software provided by ACBL. Contrary to what was reported at the last meeting, this software is free to us through the end of 2017 after which there will be an as-yet to be determined “small” monthly fee if we choose to continue to use it.

3) We will have 8 lessons per year prior to Unit Games and we will pay $125 per lesson. Edmund Wu and Vickie Lerner have expressed interest in giving lessons.

4) After extensive discussion the Board agreed to the following payment for directing unit games: $8 per table with a minimum fee of $120. If we get to the point of too many tables for one director to handle alone we will revisit the amount to be paid to a “helper” director.

III. Adjournment: Libby Noronha adjourned the meeting at approximately 5:30 p.m.

  1. Call to order

Libby Noronha, Unit President, called to order the regular meeting of the Unit 506 Board at 11 am on March 11, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catherdral, San Francisco, CA.

The following persons were present: Richard Bellerose, Gail Gabiati, Joanne Allen, Kris Wong, Martin Kaye, Phyllis (PJ) Joseph, Judy Soong, Dean Wangsvick

  1. Announcements

  1. Sectionals—St. Mary’s did not respond to Libby’s request for a rent quote for Sectionals.

  2. Please submit suggestions for the Unit 506 website to Edmund.

  1. New Business

  1. Scoring for unit games—In fairness to directors, the board determined that players who wish to change their results must contact their opponents to get agreement and then notify the director no later than midnight the day of the game.  The director will then make corrections at his convenience.  Libby will inform players at today’s game.

  1. Open issues

  1. Director fees—The board discussed an appropriate pay policy for directors.  Among other suggestions, a flat fee plus an incentive for every table over 16 was considered.  The issue was not resolved and will be considered at a subsequent meeting.

  2. Pay for pre-game lessons—After paying teachers for lesson agreements already made, i.e, $150 to Edmund Wu for March and April lessons, the board temporarily determined to pay teachers $100 per lesson, subject to revision after director fee policy is resolved.

February 11, 2017

  1. Call to order

Libby Noronha, Unit President, called to order the regular meeting of the Unit 506 Board at 10:45 am on February 11, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catherdral, San Francisco, CA.

The following persons were present: Richard Bellerose, Gail Gabiati, Joanne Allen, Kris Wong, Martin Kaye, Phyllis (PJ) Joseph, Judy Soong, Dean Wangsvick

  1. Announcements

The unit has added a new 499 game.

The unit game schedule is listed on the web site.

Richard will be listed as tournament chair for June.

Kris announced a profit of $2500 from the winter sectional.  This brings the balance of the unit treasury up to $16,000.

Edmund is starting a Saturday afternoon game at Cardology but will not have a game on the Saturdays when we have unit games.

  1. Discussion Issues

  1. Chairs at Sectionals—The manager at Pomeroy will provide all the padded chairs they have for Sectionals.  If there are insufficient chairs in the gym on Sunday we should have the caddies move any available padded chairs from the main room to the gym.

  2. Website—The website is badly out of date. Libby will ask Edmund if he can update and maintain it.  Board members suggested the following items be included on the website:

Board meeting minutes

Unit game results

Link to Sectional results

Pictures of Unit Game and Sectional winners

News, including addresses for events

Link to ACBL for partnerships

  1. Edmund is working on establishing a Unit email distribution list using an ACBL-sponsored program from Pianola.  Data comes directly from ACBL.  Email addresses are encrypted.  The Board approved accepting a 2 year free trial of Pianola and Edmund will put it in place.

  2. General problem with getting directors -- this should not be a problem in the near term since Edmund is back and Tom Stillman is a new certified director.

  3. Cost of food -- the cost of food continues to rise.  The board approved placing donation jars on the food table at unit games.  Gail Gabiati will get a jar with a lid and a slit in the cover.
